Your interests can shape your future

Middle school is a time when students begin discovering more about who they are, what they enjoy and what they might want to do in the future. Career exploration can help students connect those interests to real-world opportunities, without having to decide on a career just yet.

Through career discovery activities, students can explore different industries and begin to see how their favorite subjects and hobbies could connect to future careers. Whether a student enjoys solving problems, creating things, helping others, working with technology or being part of a team, there are many paths they can explore.

Career exploration can also help students understand that there is no single path to success. Different careers require different types of education, training and experience. Learning about those options early can help students make informed choices as they move through high school.

Families can support this exploration by asking questions such as:

  • What are you curious about?
  • What activities do you enjoy?
  • What problems would you like to help solve?
  • What is something you have done that made you feel proud?
  • Ask follow up questions as well, such as “What makes you say that?” or “Tell me more about that.”

These conversations can encourage students to think beyond a job title and focus on the interests and strengths that could shape their future.

Resources such as the Illinois Education Systems Center's middle school career exploration activities and the Arizona Department of Education's career awareness resources offer activities and information to help students begin exploring the possibilities.

Middle school is just the beginning. With curiosity and the right resources, students can start building momentum toward a future that reflects their interests, strengths and goals.
