First Star ASU Academy

A free, comprehensive four-year college access program designed to provide system-impacted youth with the academic support, encouragement, and enrichment needed to help them prepare for college success.

Empowering students to invest in their future

The First Star ASU Academy engages high school students impacted by foster care (currently or in the past), students with incarcerated parent(s), and students served under the McKinney-Vento Act in a variety of transformative learning opportunities. Participants can build a community with youth with shared lived experiences, explore careers and postsecondary pathways, and experience a residential summer program on Arizona State University’s campus.

During their time with the academy, students also participate in cultural and social activities such as field trips, recreational events, service learning, and caregiver workshops/events. Throughout the academic year, students benefit from educational advocacy and individualized support during monthly Saturday Academies.

Things changed when my case worker, she told me hey I signed you up for this program it’s called First Star, they basically help kids in foster care reach college…The work that they do, pushes our community forward.
