Small acts, Big Impact: Serving our communities
What does it mean to serve your community? For students in grades K-4, service can be found all around them, from the classroom to the neighborhood and everywhere in between.
For Arizona State University, the month of November serves as a Salute to Service. Students from all ages can explore the many careers that help communities learn, grow and thrive. These careers may look different from one another, but they all have something in common: They make a difference in the lives of others.
Teachers are an important part of every community. They help students discover new interests, build confidence and develop the skills they need for the future. Every day, teachers serve their students by creating welcoming classrooms where children can learn, ask questions and dream about what comes next.
Service also happens in ways we might not always notice. Waste removal workers help keep our neighborhoods, schools and public spaces clean and safe. By collecting and properly managing waste, they help protect the environment and support healthy communities.
These are just two examples of the many people who work behind the scenes and in our communities to make a difference. From educators and sanitation workers to firefighters, health care professionals, city employees and more, every career plays an important role in helping a community succeed.
Salute to Service is an opportunity for students to recognize these everyday heroes and begin thinking about how their own interests and talents could one day help others.
The building blocks of a successful future start with curiosity, learning and understanding the difference we can make in our communities.
