Community Impact
ASU America Reads has positively impacted the community for over 25 years with afterschool high-impact tutoring programs. Starting in 1996, through an initiative from President Clinton as a comprehensive and nationwide effort to create school reading programs, he challenged all Americans to form a “citizen army” of volunteer tutors to ensure that every child can read independently by the end of the third grade.
In the 2024/25 academic year alone, tutors served a total of 269 students in our afterschool programs, providing 9,381 hours of academic tutoring. These students achieved proficiency in an astonishing 1,167 Arizona Academic Standards. In 2024 the America Reads Associate Program was created to provide community service opportunities in other areas of education. First partnering with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Arizona to provide Elementary Mentors.
We have witnessed significant improvements in overall academic engagement among the children we serve, but the partnership has also instilled a sense of hope and aspiration within our community's youth.
